What it’s like

An hour with splatter guns and brushes at a splat station, ending with a canvas to take home.

The whole point here is mess, controlled mess. Your kid gets their own splatter station in an open plan studio, a stack of tools and brushes, and an hour to turn a blank 12 by 16 inch canvas into something they'll want on the fridge. They give you a poncho, shoe covers and goggles, and if you don't trust any of that you can pay a bit extra for a full body suit, which tells you everything about how seriously they take the paint.

An hour sounds tight but for a three or four-year-old it's probably about right before attention drifts. Older kids who get into the splatter guns properly will want longer, and there's no faffing with different canvas sizes to slow things down, everyone gets the same one. At the end you get a take home box for the canvas, because they don't have room to store anyone's masterpiece.

One thing to sort before you go: there's nowhere to change, so turn up already dressed for painting rather than planning to switch at the door. It's open plan too, so you're sharing the studio floor with whoever else has booked that slot, sharing the equipment table and paint trolleys as you go. No food during a normal session, though if you're booking a birthday party you can bring cake and your own drinks.

Parking is free for three hours at Eden Square, which is generous, and Urmston train station is a minute's walk if you're coming without a car. It's step-free and wheelchair accessible throughout, though the one toilet on site isn't adapted.

Plan your visit

How long is a session and what does it cost?

Sessions run for an hour. Prices aren't given here, so you'd want to check what a slot costs when you look at booking.

What age is this suitable for?

The paint they use is fine from 36 months, so it works from age three up.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link to go on here, just the studio's own opening hours, Wednesday to Sunday, midday to 8pm.

Is there parking?

Free parking for three hours at Eden Square, which has close to 500 spaces. Urmston station is a one minute walk if you'd rather come by train.

Can we bring food?

Not in a standard session. Birthday parties are the exception, you can bring your own drinks and a cake.

Will my child's clothes get ruined?

Ponchos, shoe covers and goggles are included, but the paint can still stain even with all that on. Come in clothes you don't care about, there's nowhere to change once you arrive.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Yes for the studio itself, prams and wheelchairs are fine and there's easy access to transport and parking. The one toilet on site isn't wheelchair adapted though.
