What it’s like

Public skating sessions, lessons and hockey on a full size rink, with a bar and restaurant for the parents watching from the side.

The rink is open pretty much all day, every day, from six in the morning until one at night, which is a strange kind of flexibility for an ice rink but means you're not boxed into one slot. Public skating sessions are the main event for most families, and there are proper lessons if your kid wants to get past the wobbly-ankles stage. If you've got one who fancies themselves as the next big thing on skates, there's learn to play ice hockey too, plus actual hockey competitions and events if you'd rather watch than skate.

There's no getting round the fact that skating with young children takes patience, and a first visit will probably mean more time holding hands along the barrier than gliding about. That said, once they've got the hang of it, the ice is the bit they'll go on about afterwards, not the getting changed or the socks.

Food-wise, the Core Bar Restaurant does meals, snacks and both soft and alcoholic drinks, so it works fine as a proper stop rather than just a quick hot chocolate between sessions. Parking's described as ample and on site, and there's blue badge parking plus an accessible toilet for anyone who needs it. Lockers are there for coats and bags, which is handy given how much kit you end up peeling off after a session.

One thing to flag: assistance animals are welcome, but that's specifically about accessibility, not a general dogs-welcome policy, so don't turn up planning to bring the family pet for the ride.
