What it’s like

Twenty-minute laser tag games through a foggy maze at Valley Centertainment, plus a VR ride if the queue for the arena's too long.

You check in, pick a game name, get kitted with a pack and gun, then get herded into an airlock for the safety briefing before the arena doors open. Once you're in it's fog, music, catwalks and mazes for 20 minutes while you hunt each other's sensors down. The site says the minimum age is 6 in its FAQ but lists 7 as the age minimum elsewhere and a minimum height of 1.1m, so it's really a game for kids who are a decent size already, not a first outing for a small six-year-old.

A single game is £7.50, or you can stack up to three for £20. If you fancy pairing it with the VR Ride (jetpack flight, a rollercoaster, a virtual aquapark), there are combo passes from £10.50 for one laser game and one VR go, up to £20 for two of each. Zappy Hour gets you two games for £8.95 if you book ahead for the weekend 10am slot or a school holiday weekday at noon, which is the cheapest way in by some distance.

Birthday parties run about two hours: two games with a drinks break between them, then pizza in the party room. It's £19.95 a head with a minimum of 8 kids, and you bring your own cake (candles and matches fine, sparklers and glitter banned because they're a nightmare to clean up). If you want the whole arena to yourselves rather than sharing with other groups, exclusive hire starts at £120 for one game and climbs to £300 for three, or there's a premium package at £375 for up to 24 players.

There's no viewing area, so if you're dropping off rather than playing, you're waiting outside the arena rather than watching through glass. Flat, grippy shoes are a must, and they're upfront that they won't take responsibility for anything lost or stolen while you're in there, so maybe don't bring the good coat.

  • Non-exclusive parties can end up playing alongside other groups of mixed ages, so you might not get the room to yourselves.
  • Weekends and school holidays get busy, especially with parties booked in, so walk-up waits for the VR Ride can stretch.
  • They won't take responsibility for lost or stolen belongings, so don't leave valuables lying about.
  • Sparklers, glitter and confetti are all banned from party cake time because of the clean-up.

What age is it suitable from?

Their own FAQ says not suitable under 6, though the general age listing says 7. Either way there's a minimum height of 1.1m, so it depends more on size than birthday number.

How much does a game cost?

£7.50 for one game, £14 for two, £20 for three. Zappy Hour gets two games for £8.95 if you pre-book the right slot.

How long does a game last?

20 minutes, which includes a 5-minute briefing before you actually start shooting anyone.

Do we need to book?

Booking's required and they take a 50% deposit up front. They want you there 15 minutes before your session starts.

What if we're late?

You risk missing your session altogether and there's no refund for it, which feels harsh but that's what they say.

What's included in a birthday party?

Two 20-minute games with a drinks break between them, then pizza in the party area. Two hours all in, £19.95 a head, minimum 8 players.

Can we hire the whole arena?

£120 for one game up to 24 players, £220 for two games, £300 for three. There's also a premium package at £375.

Is there a VR ride too?

£5 a go on its own, or bundled into combo passes with laser quest games from £10.50 up to £20.

Is there anywhere for parents to watch?

No viewing area, so you're not going to see much of the game from outside.

What shoes should we wear?

Flat ones with grip. Heels and open toes aren't allowed in.
