What it’s like

Free skating, running routes and outdoor gym kit at a Sheffield sports park with no entry fee and no booking faff.

This is a sports park rather than a soft play or a farm, so don't expect staff handing out clipboards or a gift shop on the way out. What's here is free: public skating sessions, two flat running and cycling loops (1km and 1.8km), a set of outdoor fitness equipment, and a cricket pitch if your lot fancy a knock about.

The skating is the bit most kids will remember, especially if they've never had a go before. The routes are easy going rather than a proper trail, so they suit a scooter or a bike with stabilisers as much as a determined seven-year-old on foot. The outdoor gym kit is a nice extra for parents who fancy a go while the kids are on the cricket pitch, though don't expect anything padded or toddler-specific, this is grown-up exercise gear repurposed as a distraction.

Parking's free and on site, and it's an easy run from the city centre or off J34 of the M1 if you're coming from further out, with decent public transport too. There's no booking link, which is handy if you just want to turn up on a whim, but it also means you're relying on the place not being rammed when you get there.

Because there's no entry fee, this works well as a free half day out or as the warm up before you head somewhere with a café and a bit more shelter. Just don't go expecting food on site or a clear idea of when things open, so it's worth having a backup plan if the skating session isn't running when you arrive.
