What it’s like

A moated Elizabethan manor with priest holes and secret passages, plus candlelight tours if you fancy something spookier.

This is a proper hide-and-seek of a house. The tours dig into the Catholic persecution history and the priest holes built to keep people alive when the searchers came, which is grim stuff dressed up as an adventure for anyone old enough to follow the story. Expect winding staircases, hidden rooms and the sort of tale that sticks with a ten-year-old long after you've left.

The candlelight tours are the one to save for a special trip rather than a random Tuesday. There's something different about creeping round a moated manor by candlelight instead of daylight, and it's clearly the version they're proudest of putting on.

It's open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm, and the site reckons on three to four hours for a proper visit, which is a decent chunk of a day. That's long for a younger child to stay interested in room after room of history, so this sits better with kids who can handle a guided tour without needing constant distraction. There's a café on site for when everyone's had enough of priest holes and wants a sit down.
