Glenogle Swim Centre
WHERE
Edinburgh
What it’s like
A proper Victorian swimming pool with a sauna and steam room to warm up in afterwards.
This is a 25 yard Victorian pool, the sort with real character rather than a modern leisure centre feel. Swim your lengths, then head for the sauna or steam room after, which is the bit that makes this worth the trip rather than just another municipal pool.
There's no age range given, so it reads as a pool for anyone who can swim rather than a splash-about session for little ones. Wheelchair access is properly thought through: unassisted access throughout, disabled showers, internal lifts, a pool hoist and waterproof wheelchairs on site, which is more than a lot of older pools manage.
Parking is limited on-site, and they'd rather you came by bus. Several Lothian routes stop within walking distance, which makes sense given the car park situation. There's a cafe on site, though it's run externally, and you'll need a card as they don't take cash anywhere in the building.
