What it’s like

A small hands-on aquarium where kids can pick up shore crabs in the touch pool and get their fingers tickled by prawns.

The touch pool is the bit your kids will talk about after: shore crabs to pick up, prawns that nibble at your fingers, and no glass between you and them. Beyond that there's the usual run of fish, lobsters and other sea creatures to look at, so it's a mix of hands-on and look-but-don't-touch.

It suits the 3 to 13 age bracket well, young enough for a toddler to enjoy the touch pool with an adult holding their hand, old enough for a ten-year-old to actually read the tank labels. Under 3s get in free, though they'll still need an adult with them at the touch pool. At £4.50 a child and £6 for an adult, it's the sort of price that doesn't need a birthday or a special occasion to justify a visit.

It's pram and wheelchair accessible, and dogs are welcome too, which isn't something you get at every aquarium. Parking's the only real planning bit: the Main Car Park is the closest at a five minute walk, with Readymoney and Caffa Mill a bit further out if that one's full.

Opening hours shift with the seasons, running shorter in spring and autumn (10.30am to 4pm) and stretching later in summer (10am to 4.30pm). It shuts completely in January and again from late November through December, so this is very much a spring-to-autumn outing rather than a wet Tuesday in winter fix.
