What it’s like
Sofa seats, a proper burger menu brought to your seat, and screenings built for babies, toddlers and families who can't sit still.
This is a cinema that's worked out most families can't do a silent, still ninety minutes, so it's built screenings around that. Baby Club is for under twelve months, sound turned down and lights kept soft, with a hot drink and cake or popcorn thrown into the ticket. Toddler Club does the same for ages one to five. If your lot are past that, Family Film Club runs in the school holidays with 50% off every child ticket, no limit on numbers, which is the sort of discount worth building a half-term afternoon around.
Outside of the clubs, babies under twelve months can come to any U or PG film before 5pm, free, any day. After 5pm they're not allowed in at all, so an evening screening is off the table with a newborn. There's also a relaxed screening option, lights low, sound down, and nobody minding if your child gets up and wanders about, which is worth knowing about if the ordinary hush of a cinema isn't going to happen.
Food is more than popcorn and a hot dog. There's a full menu from the bar and the Spielburger kitchen, sharing plates and specialty burgers, vegan options too, and you can get it brought to your seat. It's a nicer stop for lunch than most cinemas manage, though it also means a family trip can add up faster than a bucket of popcorn would.
Two of the four screens are stairs only, so if you're pushing a buggy or need step-free access, ask for screens 2 or 3, which have a designated wheelchair space. Buggies get limited room in some auditoriums and might have to wait outside during busy showings. There's no parking on site, though Blossom Street and Nunnery Lane car parks are close, and it's a ten minute walk from York station if you're coming by train.
