What it’s like

A community theatre in Devonport doing pantomime and family shows, with the doors open well before curtain up.

This is a proper local theatre tucked away on Fore Street in Devonport, the kind that puts pantomime and family shows on stage rather than a big touring production. If you're heading over from the city centre, City College is your landmark that you're going the right way, and the postcode PL1 4DN will get you there if you're driving.

The doors open early, which is handy if you've got kids in tow and want to get settled without a scramble. Afternoon shows open at 13:45, evening ones at 18:45, and the bar's open from the same time as the auditorium, so there's a bit of time to breathe before the lights go down.

One thing that catches people out: every child needs their own seat. No sitting on laps, even for the smallest ones, because the insurance only covers the number of seats sold and a full-length show is a long stretch for a toddler to sit still on somebody without wriggling. Booster seats are free if your child needs a bit of a lift to see over the row in front, which is a nice touch and worth asking for at the door.

Parking is the one real faff here. There's no car park. If you're coming by wheelchair, there's a lift to get in, though it's manual chairs only and has a 200kg weight limit, with two spaces at the back of the stalls. Wheelchair bookings need a phone call rather than the online system.

Plan your visit

Do we need to book tickets in advance?

You can book online and either collect on the door or just show a digital ticket on your phone. Group bookings go through the box office by phone.

Does my toddler need their own ticket?

Yes, every child needs their own seat and they can't sit on laps. Free booster seats are available if they need a boost to see properly.

Is there parking at the venue?

No car park, it's on-street parking only. They ask you not to block the small alleys nearby as residents and emergency services need access.

Is the Playhouse accessible for wheelchair users?

There's a wheelchair lift with two spaces at the back of the stalls and a disabled access toilet, but the lift only takes manual wheelchairs up to 200kg. Wheelchair bookings need to go through the box office by phone rather than online.

What time should we arrive?

The playhouse opens at 13:45 for afternoon shows and 18:45 for evening ones, with the bar open from the same time.
