What it’s like
Live shows in a proper old theatre, from panto season to Saturday morning kids' shows at £5 a ticket.
This is a working theatre with a season that swings from ballet and opera to touring plays, tribute bands and variety shows, but the bit most parents will care about is the children's programme: Saturday morning shows at £5, and a panto season that seems to be the big annual draw. Under-twos go free on a parent's lap for family shows, provided they're not taking up their own seat, which is a nice touch if you've got a baby in tow and weren't sure whether to book them in.
Ticket prices vary a fair bit by show. Something like the Saturday morning slot comes in at £5, while a bigger production such as Laundry is £12 for a child or concession ticket. Worth knowing before you commit: tickets can't be refunded or exchanged, though if a show runs several nights you can sometimes swap to a different date if there's space.
Inside the auditorium, rows A to D are level and rows E upwards are up a step, which is worth bearing in mind if anyone in your group struggles with stairs. The theatre has wheelchair spaces and ramped access throughout, and there's a café-bar on site for a drink or snack before curtain up. Street parking on Palace Avenue is free after 6pm on weekdays and all day Sunday, though it's chargeable in the daytime otherwise, and there's a pay-and-display car park a minute's walk away if you need it.
If you're planning a birthday, Stage Left does children's parties with a bouncy castle, games and catering, and there are also group ticket options for a birthday outing built around a show with buffet-style catering.
