What it’s like
Zip wires, caving and a 21-platform high ropes course on Dartmoor, with kayaking on the lake if heights aren't the plan.
This is the sort of place where the activity list does the selling for itself. There's a 21 platform high ropes course strung through the trees, a mega zip wire that runs over eighty feet across the lake, a climbing wall with routes up to 7.5 metres, and a bouldering box for practising traverses closer to the ground. If your crew fancies something underground, there's caving at Pridhamsleigh Caverns (a proper 1.1 kilometre cave system) or a shorter cave replication with 90 metres of passageways for those not ready for the real thing. On the water there's canoeing and kayaking on sheltered lakes, and a pirate ship lake and adventure playgrounds for anyone still too small for the big stuff.
Each activity runs to its own session, roughly 30 to 45 minutes, and you book and pay per activity rather than one ticket for the lot. That adds up fast if you're doing three or four things in a day, £22 for the high ropes, £11 for the zip wire, £11 for climbing, £6 for caving, and so on, so it's worth picking a couple of highlights rather than trying everything. Booking ahead online is recommended and genuinely sensible here, not just the usual advice, because weekends and holidays will fill activity slots.
The high ropes course has a minimum age of 8 and needs proper stout shoes, no sandals or crocs, so don't turn up expecting to sneak a six-year-old on. Caving is more forgiving at 5 and up, though there are size limits (over 6'4" or a 44" chest gets tight down there), and the climbing wall has both a minimum and maximum weight limit. Bouldering is fine for under-eights as long as an adult supervises. If mountain biking is the plan, that needs booking at least a day ahead separately from everything else.
With activities spanning caving, climbing, zip wires and water, a family with a mix of ages can usually find something for the smaller ones and something that actually scares the teenager. Dare Devils activities sit on top of the River Dart Country Park entrance fee, which is easy to forget when you're totting up the day's cost.

How much does it cost?
It's priced per activity rather than one ticket. High ropes is £22, the mega zip wire £11, climbing £11, caving £6, kayaking £6.50 a person and canoe hire £12 a boat.
Do we need to book ahead?
Pre-booking online is recommended to avoid missing out, especially at busy times. Bike hire specifically has to be booked at least a day before.
What age can do the high ropes course?
The minimum age is 8, and you'll need proper stout shoes, not sandals or crocs.
Is there anything for younger children?
Caving starts from age 5, and there's a pirate ship lake and adventure playgrounds for smaller kids alongside the bigger activities.
Are there weight or size limits on any activities?
Yes. The mega zip wire has weight restrictions, the climbing wall runs from 3 stone to 17 stone, and caving gets difficult for anyone over 6'4", a 44 inch chest or a 20 inch shoulder.
How long does each activity last?
Sessions run about 30 to 45 minutes depending on which activity you're doing.
Can under-eights use the bouldering room?
They can, but they need an adult with them the whole time.
Do we need to book mountain bikes separately?
Bike hire is daily but has to be pre-booked at least one day before you want it.
Does this include entry to River Dart Country Park?
The Dare Devils activities are charged in addition to the park's own entrance fee.
Can we do parties here?
Birthday parties and group bookings are both listed as options, alongside school visits.
What's the caving actually like?
There's real caving at Pridhamsleigh Caverns over 1.1 kilometres, or a gentler cave replication with 90 metres of passageways if you want something closer to the surface.
