What it’s like

A small rare-breed farm where kids can groom the ponies and meet pigs, goats and cattle for a fiver a head.

The main job here is getting close to the animals rather than just looking at them. There are daily activities where kids get to groom the ponies and meet the smaller animals, plus a proper look at the rare breeds, Irish Moiled cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, that you don't tend to see at your average petting farm.

Admission's £5 a head and under-ones go free, which is fair enough for a farm this size. Just don't wander out for lunch in the car and expect to pop back in, because there's no re-admission once you've left, so treat it as one straight visit between 10am and last entry at 4pm. The cafe doesn't need an entrance fee to use, it's open every day from 8am, and it does proper hot food with locally sourced produce alongside the usual lunchboxes and cakes, which makes it easy to turn a quick visit into a longer one.

Parking's free in the visitor car park off Muirhead Avenue, though it's a five minute walk from there to the farm entrance, worth knowing if you've got a buggy and a toddler who's decided walking is optional. The No. 18 bus stops right outside the park too if you're coming without a car. Dogs aren't allowed on the farm itself, but there's a seated area outside the cafe where they can wait it out.

Birthday parties get their own room, booked in two slots, 12pm to 12:45pm or 1:15pm to 2pm, and you'll need to ring ahead and pay a £50 deposit that isn't refundable, so it's not one to book on a whim.
