Corner Gallery
WHERE
York
What it’s like
A small gallery of local paintings, prints, photography and ceramics, seen by appointment rather than dropping in.
This is a browsing visit rather than a hands-on one, most of the time. The walls hold contemporary work from local artists, paintings next to prints next to photography, with ceramics dotted about too. It's a quiet, small-scale space rather than something with rooms to wander through, so twenty minutes might cover it unless someone in your group properly stops to look.
The catch is that you can't just turn up. It's by appointment only, so you contact them first and arrange a time that suits. That's a bit of a faff compared with a gallery you can walk into, but it does mean you're not fighting a crowd once you're in.
The one bit that isn't just looking happens during special open events, when an easel comes out and kids get to make something of their own rather than just admire someone else's. That's clearly the exception rather than the rule, so if your child needs to be doing rather than looking, it's worth timing your visit around one of those rather than a normal appointment.
