What it’s like
A proper BMX track where you turn up, borrow the gear if you need it, and race in heats of eight.
This is a racing club, not a soft-play version of BMX. Riders compete in motos of eight, then the quickest work through quarters, semis and finals, which gives even a first visit a proper shape to the day rather than just laps of a track. Coaching is available for every level, from someone who has never dropped into a berm to riders after detailed technique work, and the coaches all hold British Cycling's L2 BMX certification, so it's not just enthusiastic parents waving a stopwatch.
You don't need a race bike or club membership to have a go. Turn up with a bike that's safe for a track, the right safety kit, and a decent attitude, and they say they'll never turn you away if there's space. That safety kit isn't optional though: long sleeves, long trousers, full-finger gloves and a full-face helmet are all mandatory, and if you haven't got your own, equipment hire is available so a first session doesn't need a shopping trip first.
Joining the club properly costs £15 as an individual, which is little enough that trying a few sessions before committing makes sense. Race days themselves run roughly once a month through spring and summer, with practice in the morning before the heats start, and between race days there are pump tracks at Splott and Maindy for regular practice.
Worth being honest about the sport itself: this is high speed, big jumps and riders passing close together, and while serious injuries aren't common, crashes do happen, especially as riders get faster and more ambitious. That's not a reason to avoid it, just something to know before your child asks for the biggest jump on their first go.

Plan your visit
Do we need to book or join the club first?
No, you can just turn up and ride. If there's space and you've got the right safety gear, they say they never turn riders away.
How much does it cost?
Joining the club as an individual is £15. That covers you rather than being a one-off session fee.
Do we need our own BMX bike?
Any bike that's safe to use on a BMX track is fine, it doesn't have to be a proper race BMX. Equipment can also be hired if you need it.
How often do races actually happen?
About once a month during spring and summer, starting with practice in the morning before the heats. Outside of race days, riders practice at the pump tracks at Splott and Maindy.
Is it safe for kids?
Coaches hold British Cycling's L2 BMX qualification and safety equipment is mandatory, including a full-face helmet and full-finger gloves. It's still a high speed sport with jumps and close racing, so crashes can happen, though serious injuries are described as relatively uncommon.
