WHERE

Birkenhead

What it’s like

Rhyme time for babies, an after school Lego club and free books, all in one Birkenhead library that costs nothing to visit.

Baby Bounce & Rhyme sessions are the obvious one for the under-twos, a proper sing-and-clap slot rather than just a quiet corner with picture books. Older kids get an After School Club in term time and a Lego session that comes round fortnightly, plus the shelves themselves, a full run of fiction and non-fiction with Large Print too if that's what you need.

It's free to get in and the opening hours are generous for a library, open six days with a lunchtime closure between 1 and 2. Tuesdays and Thursdays run later, to 7pm, which is handy if you want to swing by after school rather than squeeze it into the morning. Sunday's a dead loss though, it's shut.

There's no booking link listed, so this reads as a turn-up sort of place rather than one where you need to plan ahead, though term time only sessions like the After School Club obviously won't be running over the holidays. Parking is free, either on the road on Raffles Road or in the Borough Road car park, and there's a baby change and accessible toilet on site if you're in with a pram or a wheelchair.
