What it’s like
A free library and community hub where kids can borrow books, DVDs and games, and get online on the library laptops.
This is a proper working library rather than an event venue, so the draw for kids is what they can take home. They can borrow books and newspapers, dip into e-magazines, get on the free WiFi or a library laptop, and once they're 16 there's video games and DVDs to borrow too, at £1.60 a go. Under-16s need a parent or guardian to sign for their card when they collect it, so bring ID along on that first visit.
It's free to get in and use, which counts for a lot on a wet Tuesday when you don't fancy spending anything. Opening hours run 10am to 8pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays, closed Sundays, so there's a decent stretch of the week to fit a visit round nap times or school pickup. From April 2026 there are Quiet Times built into the week too, Monday mornings, Tuesday evenings and Friday lunchtimes, which is worth knowing if you've got a child who finds background noise a lot.
The site itself is a shared community hub, so alongside the library shelves there's a council enquiry desk running weekday afternoons for things like blue badge applications, housing and waste queries, not really the kids' department but handy if you need to sort something while they're browsing the shelves. The building's step-free and there are toilets on site, and staff say the noisiest times tend to be when there's a baby and toddler session or a school visit in, so if you want it calm, aim for the evening instead.
Worth flagging that the library only reopened in March 2026 after works to sort out RAAC in the building.
