Bay Games
WHERE
Whitley Bay
What it’s like
A café where you settle in with board games, trading cards or a Dungeons and Dragons session most days of the week.
This is a games café built around actually playing rather than browsing. There's board games on the tables, trading card games including One Piece, Magic the Gathering, Pokemon and Gundam for anyone who wants to build a deck and battle it out, and role-playing sessions like Dungeons and Dragons and The One Ring for the group that wants a proper story arc. LEGO club runs too, for the ones who'd rather build than roll dice.
It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 10pm, and closed Mondays, so there's a decent window to drop in most days. Booking is required for events and sessions, which is a bit of a faff if you fancy turning up on a whim, but it does mean you're not walking in to find every table taken by a Magic tournament.
There's a café on site with indoor seating. That matters here, because games like D&D or a card tournament aren't a twenty-minute job, and the setup clearly expects you to stay a while.
The role-playing and trading card side will suit older kids and teenagers who already know their way around a rulebook, while the LEGO club is the easier entry point if you're not sure a session of The One Ring is the right first move.

Is there food?
There's a café on site with indoor seating, so you can eat and drink while you play.
