WHERE

Okehampton

What it’s like

A Dartmoor activity base where kids from about five try archery, climbing, gorge scrambling and canoeing with instructors.

This is a proper outdoor activity centre rather than a soft play with a fancy name. Instructors run the sessions, so your kids are climbing walls, shooting arrows on the archery range or having a go at axe throwing under supervision, not just left to it. There's a low ropes course and team games for the younger end, and once they're a bit more confident there's high ropes, rock climbing and gorge scrambling to work up to.

Water and moor activities are the bit worth saving for a full day out. Canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding all happen on lakes or rivers, and if the weather's kind a Dartmoor expedition day or a guided walk with navigation and orienteering thrown in will tire everyone out properly. Raft building is the one they'll talk about at school on Monday.

Ages five and up is the stated starting point, and it fits: canoeing, bushcraft, gorge scrambling, grass sledging and paddle boarding are all listed as suitable from that age, alongside guided walks and low ropes. Everything that needs an instructor, the low ropes course, mobile climbing wall, archery range and team games, has to be booked in advance rather than turned up to on the day, which is a bit of a faff if you're planning something spontaneous but makes sense given they're supervised sessions.

There's also a Granite Way cycle hub on site with a proper fleet of bikes, including electric bikes, tag-a-longs and baby chariots, plus secure lockers from £2 a day if you want to leave your own gear. The cafe does breakfast, hot drinks and cake, and there's a restaurant with a licensed bar if the grown-ups want a proper sit-down after a day of gorge scrambling. Dogs are welcome in the cafe and apparently get their own ice-cream, which feels like a nice touch.
