What it’s like

A shoes-off mini village of role play rooms, from a vet clinic to a pottery kiln, booked in two-hour sessions.

This is a village built for pretending. Kids clock in for shifts as a vet, a dentist, a shopkeeper or a barge captain, moving between themed pods like the Old Vic Theatre, a pottery kiln and a café that serves proper Staffordshire oatcakes. There's a library corner for a quieter moment and a dedicated Staffordshire Barge area for the babies, away from the bigger role play scenarios happening elsewhere.

You book a two-hour slot, and it's genuinely a slot, not a rough guide. Peak days run three sessions, off-peak term time days run two, and the site is shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during term time. Booking ahead is essential; if a session's full, they won't let you walk in, so don't turn up on spec expecting a squeeze-in.

Online prices beat walk-in ones by a couple of pounds either way, £9.50 against £11.50 for a child, so book from home rather than at the door. Shoes come off before you go in, no outside food is allowed, and the on-site café is reserved for ticket holders only, serving pizzas, paninis and speciality coffees on actual Staffordshire pottery. Parents stay onsite for the whole session, which makes sense given the amount of role play needing an audience.

Pushchairs get stored outside the village itself in a monitored but not-liable-for-loss area, worth bearing in mind if you've got anything valuable stashed underneath. The whole place is built with wheelchair access in mind, ground floor reception, accessible pods and a lift to extra toilets upstairs. Parties start at £18.50 a child including food, with their own dedicated party area if a birthday's coming up.
