Castles, Historic Houses & Heritage in Stoke-on-Trent
There isn't a castle in Stoke itself on here, but there's history worth the drive. Out at Sudbury, about 19 miles away, The Children's Country House sits in a National Trust property with a Museum of Childhood, gardens and a cafe, from £11 for a child ticket. A bit further, in Stafford, Boscobel House turns the story of Charles II hiding from Cromwell's men into a proper trail, with a willow tunnel and a tree-themed playground to work off any excitement afterwards. For a longer trip, Dudley Zoo & Castle is about 34 miles out and pairs animals with the castle ruins, useful if you're already heading towards Birmingham, with picnic areas if you'd rather bring your own lunch than pay for the restaurant. Boscobel suits toddlers who want to run about as much as look at anything, while Sudbury has the most to explore indoors if the weather turns. All three have parking and toilets sorted, so it's really a question of how far you fancy going.
