What it’s like

A timber-framed Tudor house where kids try period toys, games and hands-on history workshops in real 17th-century rooms.

This is a proper old timber-framed house, the sort with creaky floors and a Jacobean staircase, and the whole point is letting your kids loose in rooms that are actually centuries old rather than roped-off behind glass. There are hands-on workshops and talks, craft activities and trails, and period toys and games to try. It suits the five to sixteen bracket best, since a lot of it relies on reading, listening and joining in rather than just looking.

Afternoons only, one to four, with last entry at half three, so this isn't an all-day-out sort of visit. Give it an hour or two and you'll have covered it properly. It's £3 for a child and £5.50 for an adult, or £15 for two adults and two kids, which is a fair price for a house this size and beats paying separately.

The upper floor is only reachable by that original Jacobean staircase, no lift, so it's not one for a pushchair or a wheelchair user upstairs, though there's a video tour to cover that bit and the garden itself is accessible. The car park is free but has a 2.1 metre height barrier, worth a thought if you're in anything tall like a van or a roof box setup. There's a café on site doing local food, though if you're bringing a group you'll want to sort the catering in advance.

Do note it shuts for a week from Monday 13th April for a kitchen refurb, reopening the Sunday after.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£3 for a child, £5.50 for an adult, £4.50 concessions. A family ticket for two adults and two children is £15.

What are the opening hours?

Sunday to Thursday, 1pm to 4pm, with last entry at 3:30pm.

Is it suitable for a toddler?

It's aimed more at five to sixteen year olds, since the activities are hands-on history rather than soft play or sensory stuff.

Is there parking?

Yes, free parking on site, but there's a 2.1 metre height barrier so call ahead if your vehicle is taller than that.

Can wheelchairs get around?

The doorways are wide enough for manual wheelchairs and the garden is accessible, but there's no lift to the upper floor, only the original Jacobean staircase. A video tour covers what you'd miss upstairs.

Is there somewhere to eat?

There's a historic café on site doing local food. If you're bringing a group, catering needs to be booked ahead.

Do we need to book in advance?

There's no booking link, so it looks like you can just turn up within opening hours.

Is it open all year?

It closes for a week from Monday 13th April for a kitchen refurbishment, reopening on Sunday 19th April.
