WHERE

Stafford

What it’s like

Free ruined castle grounds with a woodland loop path, a hidden mouse trail in the Ancient High House, and explorer backpacks to borrow.

Up on the hill above Stafford, the castle ruins are free to walk round, and the grounds have a woodland loop path if you'd rather skip the steps up to the Keep. That Keep bit is the one to save for last: it's only reached through narrow entrances and a short staircase, so it suits kids steady on their feet more than anyone with a buggy or a wheelchair. Pick up an explorer backpack from the Visitor Centre before you set off, it's the kind of prop that turns a walk round old stone walls into an actual mission.

Down in town, the Ancient High House runs its own hunt, a Mouse Trail with mice hidden throughout the building for kids to spot. It ties in with seasonal events too, Halloween brings craft and trail activities plus the Haunted High House evening, which the site pitches as family-friendly spooky rather than genuinely frightening.

Parking is free on site, which takes the sting out of a day that costs nothing to get into anyway. Just watch the Visitor Centre hours: it opens later, at 11am, and on school tour days that slips to 2:15pm, though the castle grounds and toilets stay open regardless. The Ancient High House keeps shorter, weekday-leaning hours too.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Entry is free, both for the castle grounds and the Ancient High House.

Do we need to book?

There's no booking link, so it looks like you can just turn up during opening hours.

Is there parking?

Yes, free parking on site, open 7am to 8pm in summer and 7am to 6pm in winter.

Is it OK for a toddler or a buggy?

The grounds have a woodland loop path that avoids steps, but the Castle Keep itself is only reachable via narrow entrances and a short staircase, so that part won't work with a buggy.

What are the opening hours?

Stafford Castle Visitor Centre runs 11am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday from April to October and Saturday to Sunday from November to March. The Ancient High House is open 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

What if we visit on a school tour day?

The Visitor Centre might not open until 2:15pm instead of the usual time, but the castle grounds and toilets are open as normal, so there's still plenty to walk round.

Is there anything for kids to actually do, not just look at?

Explorer backpacks are available at the castle, and the Ancient High House has a Mouse Trail hunting for hidden mice. There are also seasonal bits like Halloween crafts and the Haunted High House event.
