What it’s like

Weekly Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers sessions for ages 5 to 18, building teamwork and resilience through hands-on activities.

Four sections run here depending on age: Beavers from around 6, Cubs from 8, Scouts from 10 and a half, and Explorers up to 18. Each one is pitched at a different stage, so a five-year-old isn't doing the same thing as a fourteen-year-old, but the thread running through all of them is the same: teamwork, leadership and the kind of resilience that comes from having a go at something new every week.

The flexibility on ages is worth knowing about before you get your hopes up on a start date. Beavers has some wiggle room from 5 and three quarters, Cubs from 7 and a half, and so on, but new starters and section transfers only happen three times a year at the start of term. That means a child who turns 8 in the middle of term doesn't just move up to Cubs automatically. They wait for the next intake, which can feel like a long wait if they're keen.

Once your child joins, you'll get an invite to Online Scout Manager, which is where you keep contact details and any allergies up to date. It's the kind of admin that matters more than it sounds, since leaders rely on it if something goes wrong on a trip. The group itself is a charity, and termly subscriptions cover the day-to-day running costs, from craft materials to equipment like tents, plus the capitation fees owed to the national Scouts Association.

Need to know

Best for
Ages 5 to 18, with a different section for each stage
  • New intakes only happen three times a year at the start of term, not the moment your child hits the age threshold
  • You'll need to keep Online Scout Manager updated yourself, it's how leaders know about allergies
  • Termly subscriptions are paid in advance per child
  • The group is run as a charity, so fees go straight back into equipment and running costs

Plan your visit

What ages can join?

Beavers from around 6 (with some flexibility from 5 and three quarters), Cubs from 8, Scouts from 10 and a half, and Explorers from 14 up to 18.

Can my child move up to the next section as soon as they hit the right age?

Not straight away. Transfers only happen at the start of term, three times a year, so there can be a wait even once they're old enough.

How much does it cost?

It's funded through termly subscriptions paid in advance for each young person, which cover materials, running costs and national capitation fees.

How do I keep the group updated on allergies or contact details?

You get set up on Online Scout Manager when your child joins, and you update details yourself through that.
