Barnacre Alpacas (Debbie & Paul Rippon)
BEST FOR
Ages 10+
ENTRY
from £30
WHERE
Newcastle upon Tyne
What it’s like
A guided walk with your own alpaca on lead, through a herd of around 400, booked by appointment for £30 a head.
You get your own alpaca to lead round for the walk, which lasts at least an hour, with the guide telling you what makes alpacas tick as you go. There's a proper carrot feed built into it, and the herd itself is the headline: around 400 alpacas, plus donkeys, goats, sheep and farm cats wandering about, so the walk turns into more of a full farm tour than a quick trot round a paddock.
This one's for older kids and adults rather than a toddler outing, the minimum age is 10, so it suits a family with a teenager after something a bit different more than a day out with a four-year-old. At £30 a person it's not pocket-change, but you're getting an hour-plus of hands-on time with an animal rather than a ticket to look at one from behind a fence.
It's appointment only. No dogs or other pets allowed on the visit, worth knowing if you'd normally bring the family dog along for the walk.
