Nottingham has two proper green spaces right in the centre. Nottingham Arboretum is about a kilometre out, free, flat and dog friendly, with a tree trail through more than 800 trees, and a cafe for afterwards. Green's Windmill in Nottingham is also free, has a community garden the kids can run round in, plus a science centre and a working mill to climb when it isn't being repaired. A little further out, Felley Priory in Underwood lets under-16s in free and has free parking, though there's no dogs or picnics allowed, and Naturescape Wildflower Farm in Langar is free to visit, with two ponds, a play area and a tearoom. For toddlers, the Arboretum's flat paths and Green's Windmill's garden are the easiest options, both free. Older children and anyone who fancies a proper walk will get more from a longer trip out to Kedleston Hall in Derby or Calke Abbey in Ticknall, both from around £4.25 for the grounds, with Calke's 600 acres good for cycling and natural play, and a faded house to explore when legs need a rest.
