What it’s like

A free-to-visit wildflower garden with two ponds, a play area and a tearoom for cake afterwards.

The main thing here is wandering, not queueing for anything. You've got a 3-acre wildlife garden to walk round, two ponds to peer into for pondskaters and whatever else is lurking, and a children's play area if the walking part wears thin before you're done. It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to try without committing a whole day's budget to it.

This suits kids who like poking about outside more than kids who need something with flashing lights. Younger children will be happy pond-dipping with their eyes and running about the play area; there's nothing here that needs a particular age or height to join in, it's just a garden and a play space.

The tearoom is doing a fair bit of the work on a visit like this. Homemade cakes, made-to-order sandwiches, hot food, teas and coffee, ice creams too, with both indoor and outdoor seating so you're not stuck if the weather turns. Worth knowing that hot food stops at 1.30pm, so if a proper lunch matters, get there before then rather than drifting in mid-afternoon.

It's open Tuesday to Saturday 9 till 4, Sunday and Bank Holidays 10 till 4, and closed Mondays apart from Bank Holidays. There's wheelchair access to the tearoom via ramps on both sides, though there are no disabled toilets, and dogs are welcome as long as they're on a lead.
