Steam Railways & Boat Trips in Brighton

Most of the boat trips leave from the coast rather than the centre. Brighton Prestige Boat Trips run small-group coastal outings straight from Brighton Marina, past the pier to the Rampion Wind Farm, while a short drive along to Newhaven marina gets you both Sussex Boat Trips, whose skippers take under-tens along the coast and older kids out further, and Maverick Boat Adventures, with speedboat rides under the Seven Sisters cliffs from £25. For miniature steam, Hove Park Railway trundles round the park close by, though it's worth a look at their Facebook before you go as there's no set timetable. If you want something free-flowing and outdoorsy for younger children, Hove Park or the Punch and Judy show at Brighton West Pier (from £2.75, Friday to Monday) make an easy afternoon near the centre. For a proper railway ride, Bentley Miniature Railway out at Lewes charges just £3 for a mile behind steam, diesel or electric engines. Further out still, South Downs Light Railway in Pulborough and Goffs Park Light Railway in Crawley are longer trips but reward you with tunnels, cuttings and 80p rides respectively. The boat trips need booking ahead; the railways mostly don't.
