Brighton

What it’s like

A Punch and Judy show on the seafront at the West Pier Centre, open a few hours a day, Friday to Monday only.

This one's small and old-fashioned in the best way: a Punch and Judy show run out of the West Pier Centre, the seafront home of the West Pier Trust, tucked into an arch on beach level east of the i360, near the Golden Spiral opposite the Hilton Brighton Metropole. It's not a big attraction with a car park and a café, it's a volunteer-run spot doing one classic thing well.

The catch is the opening hours. It only runs Friday to Monday, 12pm to 3pm, and it's closed Tuesday to Thursday entirely. School sessions are priced at £2.75 per student, which tells you this is aimed at small groups rather than a queue-round-the-block crowd, and the site itself says capacity is limited.

Because it's staffed by volunteers, there's a real chance it could be shut when you turn up even within those hours, so a quick call before you set off saves a wasted walk along the seafront. If you're already down by the i360 or the beach and fancy something short and a bit nostalgic to fold into the afternoon, this fits neatly into a spare half hour rather than being the main event of the day.
