What it’s like

A miniature steam and electric railway in Goffs Park, with 80p rides round a 380 metre circuit on Sunday afternoons.

Eighty pence gets you a ride on a proper miniature locomotive, either steam or electric, round an elevated circuit that runs for 1250 feet. Each lap takes two and a half to three minutes, which sounds brief until you're stood watching a small child's face on the way round for the third time in a row, because at that price you'll say yes again.

It only runs Sunday afternoons and Bank Holiday Mondays, from late March to late October, 2pm to 5pm, and it's weather permitting, so a grey Sunday could go either way. There's no booking for a normal visit, you just turn up and queue for a ride. The gift shop is there for the inevitable end-of-visit purchase.

Beyond riding as a passenger, some children get the chance to drive the small locomotives themselves, which is the bit they'll go on about afterwards. Playgroups, Guides, Scouts and similar structured groups can also book a private weekday event, away from the Sunday crowds.

It's an outdoor, low-key sort of afternoon rather than a big day out. Given the short season and the weather dependency, it's one to pair with the rest of the park rather than build a whole day around.
