Woodland & Forest in Sheffield

None of these woods are on Sheffield's doorstep, so this is one for a proper day out rather than an after-school dash. Sherwood Pines, a longer trip out to Kings Clipstone, has play trails and pedal paths under the pines, free to enter with parking to pay for. Silverhill Wood, also a longer trip out near Sutton-in-Ashfield, is reclaimed colliery woodland with cycling trails, orienteering and a dog selfie spot, and parking costs nothing. Further still, Heritage Wood near Ashbourne strings lights through about a mile of trail with stalls for hot drinks and crafts. If cost matters, Silverhill Wood is entirely free and easiest on prams and small legs, being flat old colliery ground. Sherwood Pines suits older children who want proper trails and pedals rather than a wander. Heritage Wood is the one to save for an evening out, from £8 a head, and needs booking ahead. All three are outdoors, so check the forecast and bring boots whichever you pick.
