Gardens & Arboretums in Sheffield

None of these gardens are actually in Sheffield, but several are an easy enough drive. Renishaw Hall & Gardens has Italianate lawns, lake paths and woodland play, with a courtyard cafe for when legs give out, and tickets start from £6. Hardwick Hall, out at Chesterfield, adds parkland picnics and woodland play trails around Bess of Hardwick's house, with wider-estate tickets from £3. A drive out to Bakewell gets you Chatsworth, from £10, with a farmyard for animal handling and a woodland playground with big slides and water play. For free days out, Pavilion Gardens in Buxton costs nothing to wander (the miniature train and boats are extra), and Felley Priory, a longer trip out to Underwood, is also free with under-16s not paying and free parking, though there's no dog walking or picnicking there. Lyme, further out at Disley, suits a full day with its deer park and Crow Wood playscape. If you're picking for toddlers versus older kids, Chatsworth's playground and Hardwick's trails give older ones more to do, while the smaller gardens suit a gentler pace.
