WHAT IT’S LIKE

Free reclaimed colliery woodland near Mansfield with cycling trails, orienteering and a dog selfie spot, no parking charges.

Silverhill Wood is a reclaimed former colliery site turned woodland just west of Mansfield, with a mix of broadleaf and conifer trees, open meadows and ponds. Kids and families can try the orienteering course, cycle the shared-access forest trails, or head up to the highest point in Nottinghamshire, marked by a miner's memorial statue with views over the surrounding area. There are two walking trails plus an extensive network of well-surfaced (but not waymarked) forest roads suitable for horse riders, no permit needed. Dogs are very welcome, including a dedicated dog selfie area, and assistance dogs are welcome too. For practicalities: the car park on Silverhill Lane (just off the B6014 near the Carnarvon Arms pub in Teversal) is open during daylight hours and free, there are no parking charges, though also no designated accessible parking spaces. Picnic benches can be found near the ponds and there's one at the car park, so it's an easy spot to bring your own food for a woodland picnic.
