Model Villages & Miniature Railways in Reading

Reading doesn't have a model village to call its own, but the Museum of Berkshire Aviation, a compact spot near Reading itself, has reconstructed aircraft and archive displays telling the story of local plane-making from £5. Out at Wokingham, Pinewood Miniature Railway pairs ride-on trains with woodland walks and pond dipping, though it only opens one Sunday a month. Further out at Bracknell, Jocks Lane Miniature Railway runs £1 rides on Open Days, weather and volunteers allowing. For toddlers, the £1 fares at Bracknell or the £1.50 (or £12 for ten) rides at Frimley Lodge Park Railway in Camberley are the easy, cheap options. Older children with a real interest in trains might prefer Didcot Railway Centre, where you actually ride Great Western steam locomotives, or Pendon Museum in Abingdon, which runs free model making drop-ins for ages 6 to 14. For a full day out, it's a longer trip to Miniland in Windsor, a LEGO theme park with over 55 rides from £32.
