What it’s like

A miniature railway looping round the park, with rides at £1.50 a go or £12 for a block of ten.

Small trains, a proper track through the park, and a ticket price low enough that you won't wince if your toddler wants to go round again. That's the whole appeal here, and it works. Under-3s ride free, and every infant gets strapped into a harness attached to whoever's carrying them, so there's no wriggling loose halfway round.

It's £1.50 a ride, or you can pick up a ten-ride ticket for £12, which is worth doing if you know you'll be there a while. Card only, so don't turn up hoping to pay in coins.

The catch is the calendar. This isn't a daily operation, it runs the first Sunday of the month from March to October, plus school holidays and some Bank Holidays, in two sessions: 11am to 1pm, then 2pm to 5pm. Check which Sunday it is before you plan a trip around it, because turning up on the wrong weekend means a park with no trains running.

Assistance dogs only, so leave the family dog at home if it's not one.
