What it’s like

A 21-acre living museum of Great Western steam locomotives, carriages and wagons, with steam train rides for the kids to actually ride on.

Steam trains aren't just parked here, they run. The centre's own grounds cover 21 acres, and wandering around it means clambering past real Great Western Railway locomotives, carriages and wagons, then getting on one for an actual steam train ride. That's the bit to save for last, since once your kids have had a go on the real thing, everything else feels like a warm-up.

Last entry is 2:30pm on all open days, which is earlier than you'd think for a full day out, so plan your arrival with that in mind rather than turning up mid-afternoon. There's a café and picnic area if you want to break the visit up rather than doing it in one long stretch, and a gift shop for the inevitable request on the way out.

The site is wheelchair accessible, which matters given how much ground there is to cover across the 21 acres. School visits are catered for too, so it's clearly set up to handle groups as well as families wandering through at their own pace.

If you can get there in December, Steam Into Christmas runs on 9 and 14 December with evening performances, a different feel to the daytime visits and one worth building a trip around rather than just adding on. Outside of that, keep an eye on the calendar, because days marked white or grey are completely closed, no exceptions.

Plan your visit

Can the kids actually ride a steam train, or is it just looking at them?

You get both. There are steam train rides as well as the chance to explore the locomotives, carriages and wagons up close around the 21-acre site.

What time is last entry?

2:30pm on all open days. It catches people out, so don't leave your visit until mid-afternoon.

Is it open every day?

No. Days marked white or grey on their calendar are completely closed, so it's not a straightforward every-day-of-the-week visit.

Is there anything on for Christmas?

Steam Into Christmas runs on 9 and 14 December, with evening performances alongside the usual daytime visits.

Is there somewhere to eat?

There's a café on site, plus a picnic area if you'd rather bring your own food.
