What it’s like

A local history museum with a recreated dungeon in the basement, built around Wymondham's Victorian, wartime and prison-reform past.

Down in the basement there's a recreated dungeon, which is the bit that'll stick with a seven or eight-year-old long after the rest of the visit fades. Above ground it's a proper local history museum, working through Victorian industry, WW2 and the town's part in prison reform, told through the kind of objects and displays a small museum does well.

It suits school-age children rather than toddlers. The facts list a minimum age of five, and there's not much here to hold a younger one's attention beyond the dungeon itself. For a curious eight or nine-year-old doing WW2 or the Victorians at school, though, this is a proper hands-on top-up to the topic.

Entry is properly cheap. A child ticket is £1.20, adults £4, and a family ticket comes in at £9, so a couple with a couple of kids can do the whole thing for less than the cost of a soft play session. There's a café on site if you need a sit down and a drink partway through. Once a month, on the third Tuesday, there's a tour running from 10am to noon, which is worth building a visit around if the timing works for you.
