What it’s like

Kids climb into a real Chieftain tank turret and ride a BV206 all-terrain vehicle over an off-road course.

This one's for anyone with a child who has ever asked "can we go inside it" at a museum and been told no. Here you can. The Chieftain tank turret is open to climb into, and there's a ride in a BV206, the tracked all-terrain vehicle that bounces over its own off-road course. That's the bit worth building the visit around, and it's not something you'll find at your average local museum.

Outside there's a play area and access to country walks, so a visit doesn't have to be all engines and armour if you've got a child who needs a run-about between exhibits. The tea room does hot and cold drinks and light snacks, with cakes on event days, and you can bring your own food along if you need to for medical or sensory reasons.

It's £9.50 for an adult, with one child under 12 admitted free per paying adult, £5 for extra children under 12 or for anyone aged 12 to 17. A family ticket for two adults and two teenagers is £26, and if you reckon you'll be back, the annual pass at £40 gets you unlimited return visits, though it won't get you into the Armourfest weekend for free.

The catch is the opening days. It's only open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, so Monday, Friday and Saturday plans need a rethink, and the whole place shuts from 22nd December through January. Access has clearly been thought about properly, with step-free entrance, an accessible toilet, Blue Badge parking near the entrance and a wheelchair or mobility aid to borrow if you need one, though that Blue Badge parking can fill up at peak times.

What days is it open?

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm. It's closed on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, and shuts over Christmas from the 22nd of December through January.

Do we need to book?

There's no booking link for a general visit. School and group visits do need to be arranged in advance so staff know you're coming.

Is it good for a wheelchair user?

There's step-free entrance, an accessible toilet, Blue Badge parking close to the entrance and a wheelchair or mobility aid you can borrow. Essential companions may get a free carer ticket.

Can carers get in free?

Carers can, but you need to show proof such as carer's ID, PIP, DLA, a MAX Card or National Carer's Card. A blue badge on its own doesn't count as proof.

Is there anywhere to eat?

There's a tea room for hot and cold drinks and light snacks, with cakes on event days. You can bring your own food too if it's needed for medical or sensory reasons.

Is an annual pass worth it?

It's £40 for unlimited return visits over a year, though it doesn't cover free entry to the Armourfest weekend. The person who paid becomes the named member and has to show ID on return visits.

Are dogs allowed?

Assistance dogs are welcome, with water bowls and toilet areas provided.

Is there anything for kids who aren't into tanks?

There's an outdoor play area and access to local country walks, plus an annual Easter Egg Hunt with arts and crafts.
