What it’s like
A free library and archive of working class history in Salford, with exhibitions and Friday afternoon tours.
This one's more for curious older kids than toddlers looking for something to climb on. The draw is the display spaces, permanent and temporary exhibitions on working class history, plus a proper archive and library collection you can browse if that sort of thing interests your household. It's free to drop in, which is rare enough for anywhere these days that it's worth flagging on its own.
Drop-in visiting is Wednesday to Friday, 1pm to 4:30pm, and if you want the reading room specifically that runs Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm but needs booking at least three working days ahead. That advance notice is a bit of a faff if you're deciding on a whim, so it suits a planned trip more than a rainy afternoon rescue. Fridays at 2pm they run tours of the library, which sounds like the best way to actually get something out of a visit with kids rather than just wandering the exhibition spaces alone.
It's step free throughout, with an accessible toilet, and the events annex has a ramp on entry and a small kitchenette. Salford Crescent train station is a short walk away and also step free on all platforms.
