What it’s like

A free poetry library in town to duck into for a browse, with a café if the kids need feeding after.

This is a library built around poetry, so don't expect a play area or anything designed to entertain on its own terms. What you get is shelves of poetry to browse, a quiet ground-floor space, and a café on site if you need a coffee and something for the kids to eat while you're there. It's free to get in, which makes it an easy stop rather than a big planned outing.

The hours are a bit of a puzzle to work around. Monday, Thursday and Friday it shuts at 4:30pm, Tuesday and Wednesday it stays open till 6, and Saturday it opens later at 11 and closes at 5. Sunday it's shut altogether, so a weekend visit really only works on the Saturday.

Access is straightforward: it's all on the ground floor, with level access at both the front and back doors, so a buggy or a wheelchair isn't a problem either way.

If you've got a child who likes books and a bit of quiet, or you're killing an hour before or after something else in town, this fits neatly into that gap. It's not somewhere to build a whole day around, but on a wet afternoon with nothing else planned, it's somewhere to go that won't cost you anything.
