What it’s like

A free, no-fuss library with Books and Rhymes sessions for under-fives and holiday activities laid on for older kids.

There's no admission to worry about here, it's just books, and for a rainy Tuesday with a toddler that's exactly what you want. Books and Rhymes sessions run for the under-fives, so if your little one is at the age where they'll grab any book with a dog on the cover, this is a decent way to spend half an hour that costs nothing. School holidays bring extra activities for children too, which is handy when you've run out of ideas by day three of the break.

Opening hours are generous through the week, open till 10pm Monday to Thursday if you're the sort of household still needing somewhere to go after tea. Friday's a bit shorter, finishing at 6.30pm, and Saturday is mornings only, 9 till 1, with the doors shut all day Sunday. Bank holidays are closed too unless they say otherwise, so it's not a fallback for a bank holiday Monday.

You can borrow 10 items on one account and there are no overdue fines, which takes the sting out of forgetting a picture book under the sofa for three weeks. There's a car park at the front, and the building has an accessible toilet, baby change and wheelchair access.

It won't fill a whole day out, but as a free, dry, indoor stop with something structured for small kids, it does its job without any fuss.
