What it’s like
Free rhyme time for under-fives and a quiet spot to borrow books, with holiday activities laid on too.
Books & Rhymes is the regular fixture here, a session aimed at under-fives that gets them singing and turning pages before they're even at school. Outside of that there are holiday activities for children, so it's worth having a look at what's on when term ends. Everything's free to get in, and with 10 items allowed per library account and no overdue fines, it's a low-stakes way to build up a stack of picture books at home.
It's step-free throughout with an accessible toilet, so buggies and wheelchairs aren't an afterthought. There's roadside parking outside, which is handy but not guaranteed if you're going at a popular time. Wifi and computers are there too if you need to get something printed while the kids potter about the shelves.
Opening hours are a bit of a puzzle to work round: Tuesday to Friday it's 9am to 5.30pm, but the library shuts for an hour at lunch, from 12.30 to 1.30, so don't turn up right on the dot expecting to get in. Saturday's a short window, 9am to 1pm, and it's closed all day Sunday and on bank holidays unless they say otherwise. For a rainy weekday morning with a toddler in tow, it's an easy, free way to fill an hour, and nobody's going to mind if you're there for the warmth as much as the books.
