What it’s like
Free rhymes sessions, a whole library of books for under 16s, and computers to use, all with no overdue fines to worry about.
Books & Rhymes sessions are the regular fixture for under fives here, and it's free to join in. Beyond that there's the usual library run of things for kids, books for 0 to 16 year olds, plus computers and printing if your seven-year-old needs to bash out homework or you just want five minutes of wifi while they browse the shelves.
It's free to get in and free to borrow, ten items per card, and there are no overdue fines, which takes the sting out of forgetting a return date with a toddler in tow. Lose the card and they'll replace it free too. Damage a book and there's a charge, but the site says it'll never be more than the book's worth, so nobody's bankrupting themselves over a chewed corner.
Hours are generous most of the week, open from 8am and running until 10pm Monday to Thursday, 8am to 6.30pm on Friday. Saturday is a much shorter window, 9 till 1, so don't turn up expecting an afternoon session. It's shut on Sundays, and shut on bank holidays too unless they say otherwise.
There's free and pay and display parking on site, and the building's wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet and baby change. If you want the local history collection or fancy hiring a room for something, both are options worth asking about at the desk.
