What it’s like

Skating sessions with hire skates, ice frames for wobbly toddlers and lessons that start from age 2.

You turn up, pay at the Box Office and skate for two hours, no booking needed. Doors open on the hour, so there's a rhythm to the day if you want to time it right. Ice frames are available for the younger ones learning to balance, though there's a height restriction on those for safety, so check your child fits before you promise them a go.

Lessons start from age 2, and a coach will do 15 minutes one to one for £8 if your child wants proper instruction rather than clinging to the barrier. A family ticket is £32 for two adults and two children, and adding skate hire for all four comes to £14 on top, which stings a bit once you add it up but is still less than paying separately. Skate hire itself is £3.50 a head if you just need it for one or two of you.

Spectators pay £2, which is fair enough if you've got a grandparent who wants to watch rather than skate. Card payments have a £10 minimum, so bring cash if you've got your own skates and are only popping in for a sharpening or a quick session. Weekends in winter get busy, so if you want more room on the ice, weekdays before 6pm are the quieter option.

Birthday parties come with a dedicated party helper for £18, and it's £15.50 a head for the children's party itself, though the deposit is non-refundable and can't be transferred, so pick your date carefully. Parking's free on site, and if you're coming by metro, Monkseaton or Whitley Bay stations are both about ten minutes' walk.
