What it’s like
Free book borrowing, public computers and wifi, plus events for children as well as adults.
This is a proper working library rather than a visitor attraction, and that's the appeal if you need a free, quiet place to fill a couple of hours. Kids can pick their own books and take out up to twelve at a time, free, for three weeks. There are events and activities on too, open to all ages, so it's worth asking staff what's coming up if you want to plan around one.
Nothing here costs anything to use. Public computers and wifi are on offer if you need to get something done while your child browses the shelves, and there are toilets on site, which matters more than it sounds when you've got a small child and a stack of picture books to get through.
One thing that's actually useful to know: there are no overdue fines for anyone under 16, or for the over-60s. So if your seven-year-old forgets a book under the bed for a fortnight past the deadline, it costs you nothing. That takes a lot of the stress out of letting kids borrow freely.
