What it’s like

A free-to-enter art gallery in Edinburgh, open six days a week for a quiet browse with the kids.

This is a small commercial gallery rather than a hands-on kids' attraction, so don't expect activity sheets or a soft play corner. What you get is walls of paintings to look at and talk about, and it costs nothing to walk in and have a wander. If your children are the sort who'll happily point at pictures and ask daft questions, it's a decent free half hour to fill.

It's open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5.30pm, which makes it easy to fit in around other plans rather than something you'd build a whole day around. Worth knowing they sometimes close early on Saturdays, so if you're heading there after 3pm on a Saturday it's best to ring first rather than turn up and find the door shut.

The one real snag is access. There are four steep steps at the entrance and no wheelchair access, which rules it out if you've got a buggy you can't fold and carry, or anyone in the family who needs step-free entry. They say to get in touch beforehand to talk through access needs, and it's also open by appointment, so a quick call before you go isn't a bad idea either way.
