What it’s like

A book-filled play space in Calderstones Park with dress-up, craft, storytelling and a garden stroll built round the story.

This one's built entirely around stories, not just a soft play with some books scattered about. Kids dig through hundreds of hand-picked children's books, dress up in costumes, get stuck into the craft room and join in with storytelling and sing-alongs. There's also a story-themed stroll through Calderstones park itself, so the visit doesn't stay indoors the whole time.

Sessions are flexible, the site says there's no need to sit still for a set programme, which suits a toddler who wants to wander off to the dress-up box halfway through a story. Automatic doors mean a big pram gets in without a fight at the entrance, and there's a café on site for when everyone needs a sit down.

Access has clearly been thought about properly. There's a lift and wheelchair access to every area, including the Theatre Room, and free wheelchair hire on site if you email ahead to arrange it. Accessible parking is available too, along with an accessible toilet and baby change.

Birthday parties are on offer, with stories, games, dressing up, music and party food built in, which takes the pressure off if you were dreading planning games yourself.
