What it’s like

A pottery studio where kids from 6 to 16 get their hands on a wheel or build with clay, no experience needed.

This is a clay studio rather than a paint-your-own-mug shop, so the main thing happening is proper wheel throwing and hand-building, aimed at kids aged 6 to 16. The Kids Mud Club sessions run at £45 a go, or £160 for four sessions which knocks £20 off if your child takes to it and wants to keep going. Wheel throwing parties run for 4 to 6 kids at £45 a head, 1.25 hours, and only happen in the studio itself rather than coming to you.

The single-session price is the bit that'll make you pause. £45 for one go is a proper outlay for a first try at pottery, and taster sessions are non-refundable if you miss them, so don't book the morning of a birthday party you might oversleep for. If it clicks, the four-session bundle is the better value and gives a child time to actually get the hang of centring clay on a wheel rather than just having a go once and moving on.

Hand-building parties fit up to 8 kids for £280 in the studio, or £380 if you'd rather they came to your venue, both running 1.25 hours with extra kids at £25 each. All the materials, tools and tuition are included in every session, so you are not turning up needing to bring your own apron and hope for the best.

It's on an upper floor with no wheelchair access to the studio or the toilets, which is worth knowing before you book if that matters for your family. Parking is a five-minute walk away on The Ride next to Preston Park, and Preston Park station is about 20 minutes on foot or a short bus ride if you're coming by train.
