What it’s like

Wheel-throwing and pottery courses for beginners and experienced potters, plus an Open Studio to pay by the hour.

Sitting at a wheel and actually shaping clay is the main event here, and the courses are built so it doesn't matter if you've never touched a lump of clay before. Beginners get proper teaching, and there are advanced sessions if you've done it before and want to push further. No experience is needed to book onto a class, which takes the pressure off if you're going in cold.

If you or an older child already knows the basics, the Open Studio is worth knowing about separately. There's no membership, you just pay by the hour when you turn up, but it's really aimed at people with some experience rather than complete beginners, since there's no formal teaching in that session, just a technician on hand for guidance. Small groups can come along too, though you'll need to book ahead and be mindful of others working around you.

Opening hours are a bit particular: Tuesdays and Thursdays run 10am to 9pm, which gives you an evening option, Saturdays are 10am to 4pm, and it's closed Sundays. Cancelling a class needs 48 hours' notice, and there's no make-up session if you miss one, so it's worth treating the slot as fixed once you've booked it. Clay, glazes and tools are also sold on site if you want to keep working at home.

Getting there is straightforward without a car: bus 50 stops two minutes away at Hollingdean Road, and there's a cluster of other buses stopping three minutes off at the Sainsbury's Lewes Road stop. There's free on-street parking nearby too if you'd rather drive.

No, classes are built for complete beginners as well as more experienced potters.

How do I book a class or workshop?

Directly through their website. If anything goes wrong with the booking you can email them.

Is the Open Studio suitable for a beginner?

It's really better suited to people with some experience already, since there's no formal teaching, just a technician around for guidance.

What if I need to cancel?

They ask for at least 48 hours' notice for classes and workshops. Miss a session without cancelling and there's no make-up class offered.

Is there parking nearby?
