What it’s like

Hands-on clay sessions in Brighton where kids get stuck into the pottery wheel or hand-building, then decorate what they make.

You get in among actual clay here, either on the wheel or hand-building, then onto decorating whatever's taken shape. It's a proper studio setup rather than a paint-a-mug caf, so there's more mess and more to show for it at the end.

Parties run for 1.5 hours and are aimed at ages 6 to 16, which feels about right, younger kids will struggle to get much from a wheel session and the clay itself needs a bit of patience. A studio party is £304 for up to 8 children, or £20 a head if you're topping up to 10. They'll also come to you for a party at home, which is £340 for up to 8 and £25 a head beyond that, useful if you don't fancy transporting a birthday cake across town.

Book early if you can. Private bookings need three weeks notice, which is a longer lead time than most parties need, so this one's for the diary rather than a last-minute decision. If plans change, you'll need to cancel at least 7 days out to get your money back on a kids party.

It's a one-minute walk from Preston Park Station, and buses 5, 5A and 91 stop nearby. If you do, on-street parking is capped at 4 hours and you pay through an app, so turn up with a bit of time in hand. Worth knowing the studio isn't wheelchair accessible and only holds 12 people at a time.
