The Lantern
WHERE
Sheffield
What it’s like
A community theatre putting on family shows, with a bar that only opens an hour before curtain up.
This is a proper theatre trip rather than a soft play afternoon: you get a seat, a show, and an interval drink if you fancy one. Children are welcome and need their own ticket, and the site suggests under-14s come with an adult, so this isn't somewhere to drop the kids off and wait in the car.
Seating is split between the stalls on the ground floor and a balcony up a staircase the venue itself calls steep, so if you've got a toddler on your hip or a bad knee, book stalls and save the balcony for another day. The bar opens an hour before the performance with drinks, hot chocolate and Sheffield ice cream, but seating there is limited, and it's card only for everything, tickets and bar alike, so leave the coins at home.
Getting your tickets sorted in advance is worth doing properly. You can print at home, load them onto your phone, or just give your name on the door, though posting them out costs an extra £2.50 for no obvious reason. Doors to the auditorium usually open about ten minutes before the show starts, which isn't long if you're still finding a parking space.
Parking on site is limited to a handful of spaces, but there's free on-street parking nearby if you're happy with a short walk. If you want to make an evening of it, the Stag's Head on Psalter Lane is the closest option for food, with more choice along London Road and Eccleshall Road.

Plan your visit
Do we need to book ahead?
Booking online works round the clock, or you can ring the box office on weekdays and Saturday mornings. The theatre box office itself only opens on show nights.
Can we pay in cash?
Card only, for tickets and at the bar. They stopped taking cash because of banking difficulties, so make sure you've got a card on you.
Is it suitable for young children?
Children are welcome and need a ticket like everyone else. Under-14s are best brought with an adult, and some shows carry age guidance.
Is there wheelchair access?
There's a wheelchair space on the back row, but you need to email ahead to book it. There's also an accessible toilet.
What about parking?
The on-site car park is small, so most people end up on the free on-street parking nearby.
